Is it possible to get grade 8 violin in 4 years? How much time does one need to practice a day?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Is there a difference in adult and children? Does adult learn faster?

probably…. but it depends.. i just started violin in 2006 dec but i’m now already preparing for grade 6.. i spend at least 2 hours a day but i can go till 4 or 5 hrs a day sometimes.. of cos the biggest reason why i learn it fast is due to my piano bkgrd. i’ve learnt piano for more than 10 yrs :)

u can certainly make it if u practise hard :)

Would you be mad at your child for skipping school?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I skipped today. I don’t know how my mom will react but I feel I have a good reason. I took my dad’s violin to a music shop to see if they could repair it. I know that I could have waited until the weekend but I don’t think I could have handled the wait. I feel so horrible for breaking it and even worse to be told it can’t be fixed. I have never done this before so I don’t know how my mom’s going to feel so how would you parents feel? What would you do for punishment?

your mum is probably going to feel disappointed in you and will probably go mad but only because she cares about and wants you to get the best education you can. could you off not done it after school?

How do I work an electric violin?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I got an electric violin as a gift and I am so excited to play it but it won’t make any sound! I’m probably just making some stupid mistake but whenever I try to move the bow across the strings, it won’t make any sound. I got it tuned at a music shop so I don’t think that’s the issue. I played the violin as a child so I’m somewhat familiar with the instrument but not an electric violin. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? Thank you so much!

Where can I learn to play the piano/guitar/violin?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Hi everyone!
as a child I was never presented with the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument because my parents were always working and couldn’t afford classes for me to learn how to play anything.
are there any techniques I could learn to make it easier?
are there any online tutorials?
as of now I only have a guitar but I want to purchase a piano and a violin….where can i get these for a low cost (for a beginner???)

Is it possible to learn to play the violin without hands-on instruction?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I know it will be better if I had hands-on from an instructor, but all I am asking is if it’s at all possible to learn from a book, DVD or online course?

I have a very nice student violin, that has been thoroughly checked out by the local music store, and I’m really anxious to start terrorizing everyone in my house with my practice sessions. (kidding) I’ve played guitar for over 20 years, but I have a feeling this little violin is going to be a different animal altogether!

The problem is there is only one person in a 60 mile radius from us who teaches violin, and she is booked solid with students and will not take any more until next spring. (That, and she is known for having a better relationship with children than adults.)

Any instrument to be played well comes from the love of the instrument. My son learned the harp of all things by playing it by himself when he was 10. Yep same biker son that is 24 now. To me an instrument of any kind is like hugging a good friend or feeling comfortable in a familiar chair. If you really love what you are trying to accomplish…YOU CAN DO IT. I personally believe that teachers are great but I also believe that even the best teacher cannot teach what it not in the person (you know kinda like Karate). If you reallly like the sound and feel of the violin you can learn to play it by yourself. Or if you are not comfortable with it in your arms it will sound like you are just trying to attract other mates at the fence who like pink soctch. BUT whether you succeed or not you will teach your children in the process to TRY and also if it does not work out you will teach them that we all have limits that we must accept. MUCH SUCCESS either way. I personally loved to play and so does my daughter…My personal belief..a house cannot have too much music, too many books, too much love, and it can never have too much laughter. LTL Alda

Where on the internet can I find "sweet child of mine" string quartet sheet music?

Monday, December 21st, 2009

I’m trying to find the sheet music to sweet child of mine on violin. I couldn’t find it. It’s played by the "vitamin string quartet". The Album is "the string quartet tribute to guns and roses". If you want to hear it, it’s on emusic. Go to track, type in sweet child of mine and scroll down.

Should I purchase a cheap violin?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

I saw some violins on ebay for $50. That’s pretty cheap. The feedback was all positive, though. I used to play violin as a child, but lost the skill later. Should I go ahead and purchase a cheap violin to practice on or spend more on one that might be more worth it?

Are there any violins that are pretty good that I can spend around $150-$200 on until I can afford a better one?

Thanks for any advice :)

I suggest you find a reputable store that sells moderately priced instruments. They will let you play several so you can tell if they have the tone you want.

I would advise NOT buying a musical instrument online. There is no way to tell if the instrument is "dead" or "live" on the internet.

Yes, it is sometimes possible to pick up a good instrument cheaply, but be sure to play it first. Be sure you have choices.

I’ve seen some reports of good, cheap violins coming out of China now. Perhaps you can find a brick and mortar store that stocks them.

What should I expect in an orchestra audition? [child]?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

so, im just wondering if you pros haha or any players have any advice/tips for me?
i play the violin and im having an audition soon. thanks a lot =]

*I like your name*

Eat a banana–the potassium calms your nerves.

Is it a blind audition? If not, expect to see the judges writing a lot of things down/perhaps typing on laptops. That’s one thing I was NOT expecting my first time.

Remember, they want you to do well. They’re not hoping you fail–if you fail, that have to listen to you play the violin horribly. They want you to do well! They’re rooting for you!

Get there early so you have plenty of time to find your audition room and you won’t be frantically running to get there on time. Leave yourself time to tune/warm up. It’s very important.

Just play with all your heart and feel the music. They’ll be able to tell if you love it or not. Whatever you do, don’t worry! :) Oh, and remember to breathe!
