What type of glue holds violins together?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

An old violin found in the family farmhouse needs a minor seem repair. I would rather fix it myself than send it to a repair shop. Based upon other items found with it, we are assuming it is from mid 1800’s.

if the violin is from the 1800’s you wouldn’t want to put glue on it and mess it up. even though it might be expensive, take it to a violin repair shop. you don’t want a priceless violin to become… price-less do you?

Okay, that’s basically everything UF knows lol. Oh, and if it matters my sister attended UF (she’s ten years older than me) and she is now a doctor. I said in my application essay that I’m striving to become a doctor as well.

why just go to UF? It seems like you have a chance at going to an Ivy League or to a better university like Emory University that will have smaller classes and more resources for students.

I’m looking to buy a violin. My price range is up to $300. Any recommendations?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I played the violin for years but I have always rented the instrument and now I’d like to purchase one. Money is pretty tight and ideally I’d spend $200 but I’m trying to get at least half way decent instrument.
Any suggestions?

Does the place where you rented for years allow you to apply a percentage of the $ paid in rent towards a new instrument? The cheapest, most decent sounding instrument I have ever come across is a Yan Qin. They have it at Southwest Strings for five hundred something. I agree with the people above me. Unless you want a real piece of junk, you will have to find a good deal from a friend of a friend. Stay away from ebay! I have had students come in with ebay instruments and they are terrible! The pegs don’t stick and they sound like strings attached to a 2×4.
Why don’t you check out craigslist.com? Maybe you’ll come across some poor person that is selling a good instrument for less than it’s worth because they dont’ know any better. I found a fixer-upper grand piano on there for $50.00

what is the difference between a fiddle & violin?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I am trying to find a good website for fiddles. I would rather buy a used one, & one adult size & child. I want to learn & so does my 5 year old. I went to amazon.com found a few things not much. This is the important question maybe stupid but I can’t figure it out so bare with me please
what is the difference between a fiddle & violin? Is there really? Im finding violins everywhere when i look up fiddles but few fiddles. Any help would be nice thank you in advance.

In terms of the instrument there is absolutely no difference between a fiddle and a violin; they are exactly the same, really. The difference is the type of music played on them.

About how much cash would it take to fix my violin?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

My violin needs two new strings, tuning, and i need someone to repair it for me

"How much would it cost do you think?

You can go to someone and I think they’d give you a good estimate. I’m sure it would be fine if you checked a few places to see who would give you the best price. It’s difficult to say because I don’t know the specifics of your violin.

Are there any Christian Bible centerd colleges/ universities in the north eastern part of America?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I’m looking for a good christian college to go to. I want to learn more about music and get classical vocal training. I sing but sometimes I just wish I was of a more classical background. I work with what I have and the genre I put my self in, I don’t even think it exist; but I call it a mix of Blues, jazz, folk, indie(not crappy indie), acoustic worship, and gospel. I love to sing and write, but I would love to go into the producing part of music before I would get into singing. I love blues, jazz, acoustic, folk, reaggea and the indie styles. I’m also into spoken word and hip hop/ "rapping" but I would rather choose to call it spoken work/ beautifully flowing poetry with somewhat of an edge or style. I have always been into techno/ electronica and I would love to blend an acoustic style with electronic, almost industrial sounds. I love anykind of instrument, from a acoustic guitar to a violin, kazoo, dobro, jembe, cello, congas, piano anything that can make sounds basically. But I want to go to college and grow and make music. That’s ultimate happiness for me, music, education, and food. Haha, I don’t kno why I posted all of this but I want to fall deeper into music. I have so many ideas, and I want to share them so I could be a history maker haha, where can I find a good christian college for what I want to do, in the north eastern part of the usa? Even if its not christian, whjats a good school for music in the north east usa? Please and thank you! Thanks for taking the time to read this :)

If you’re looking specifically in New England, and not say, Ohio or Delaware or that part, you’ll find more Catholic colleges. The best you can do (and I assume you’re looking for a Protestant college, since you didn’t specify) is look for colleges with religious affiliations, like Baptist or Methodist. I recommend Peterson’s Four-Year College book–you can search by state and check to see religious affiliations, and you can also find which majors those schools offer.

What kind of violin and bow should I buy?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I’ve been playing the violin for over six years now and I still don’t have my own violin!! (I have been using a county one) I would like to buy one and I have up to £700 to spend on the violin and bow so does any one have any suggestions on what type I should get?
Thanks!

I’ve been playing for about 8 years and have just bought a new violin,It’s called the Elysia Stenter and cost me around £400-£500 pounds, depending on where you get it from. It has a gorgeous, mellow sound and the wood patterning looks very professional.

You can also go to a violin store and buy a more older violin, because they say that the older a violin is the better the sound produced.

I had a student violin until this February, when I spent my money on my new violin, and it sounded alright but I needed a better one for my grade 7-8 exams, so I bought the Elysia Stenter and I love it.

What are good outcomes of playing an instrument as a child?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I don’t plan to become a professional violinist, but i’ve been playing violin since i was 6 or 7 years old, and now i’m 13. I’m not sure if i should continue playing, because there doesn’t seen to be any use to it. So, is there any purpose to continue playing violin even though i’m not going to play it professionally as an adult? thanks!

Even if you do not want to play professionally, music can often be your best friend. It will always be there for you, even if others leave you. Music is what got me through middle school and high school. It is a way that you can really express yourself, a way you can let your emotions flow. It picks you up when you are down, lets you vent your frustrations, and lets you sing for joy in times of bliss. I would highly reccommend that you keep playing your violin, even if you want to just do it for a hobby, because I believe that you will find that it is so much more than just a hobby. It is a healthy and fun way to express yourself. You will always have your music, even when things are at their worst. So please continue with your studies…it will bring you more joy than you could ever imagine. :)

Violin Lessons once every two weeks, is it enough?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I just bought a cheap little violin which needs a few minor repairs and then I hope to have a go at learning to play.

I probably cannot afford this until after Christmas but I might have the money for a music lesson every two weeks. I am just wanting to learn to play and I’m not bothered about exams and such. Do you think a lesson every two weeks would be worth while or do you really need to have lessons every week to progress?

Many thanks for your opinion!

Anna
Just a note to say I am an adult beginner.

Right now to prepare for college auditions, I’m doing (piano) classes every other week. They seem to be working well – I’ve only had 2!

But once a week is more beneficial.

However, in your case, as a laidback learner, every 2 weeks wouldn’t be that bad (or expensive!)
